I've had the occasional small infestation of fruit flies, but never had any problems with them before, but the shitty apartment I'm living in now has become infested like I've never seen.
I have 8 commercial fruit fly traps and a few of the cups with saran wrap on top set around, and they get probably 50-100 each trap, each day. I've thrown away all food outside of the refrigerator, checked all cupboards, am taking out the trash 2-3 times a day (and rinsing anything that goes in there that might attract them, as well as taking out food trash immediately). I have put bleach in all the drains and have started dumping large pots of boiling water down every drain in the house 2-3 times a day. I'm washing dishes and surfaces as soon as they're used and making sure there's no standing water.
Sometimes it seems like I'm making progress, but then they come back with a vengeance. I'm currently on like day 5-6 of this routine, but I'm thinking the problem is that I haven't been able to identify the source of the infestation. I am completely beside myself and don't know what else to do.
They were mostly in the kitchen and bathroom at first, so I focused on those rooms, but they have now spread to every part of the house. I'm currently hiding in my bedroom (which until today has been almost fly-free) and I'm being buzzed by 5-6 flies that I see around me here, right now. They seem attracted to me and I've had them fly into my nose and mouth. It's making me lose my mind. I've started eating outside because I literally can't make anything without them being all over it in seconds.
I have used beer, white vinegar, and rice wine vinegar fairly well, but went out and bought a large container of apple cider vinegar today, since everywhere seems to say that's the best lure, but they don't seem interested in it?
I'm positive they are fruit flies though – no grey smash spots like drain flies, and no plants or anything else that may have brought them in, and I'm sure the infestation started in the kitchen originally.
It's getting to the point where I'm thinking I may have to hire an exterminator, but I've never done so and don't know what to expect.
All of that being said, I guess I have a few questions: 1. Is there anything else I can do that I'm not currently doing? 2. Is there a maximum number of traps I should place? Can there be too many? 3. Where else could I look for the source of the infestation? 4. What would it look like having exterminators out – what do they do when they come out for fruit flies? Will they try to locate the source? 5. Any other advice/words of wisdom/comfort?
I'm completely losing it and can't keep living like this. I'm so overwhelmed. I've NEVER had anything like this before and it's making me crazy. I literally get buzzed by a fly every few seconds, all day, every day, and now I'm left without a single corner of my house that I can get a little respite from it all.
Thanks so much in advance.
